Serena O’Brien

Serena O’Brien is the Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Coordinator at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin. During ten years spent at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, she developed a particular interest in cardio-thoracic nursing and acted in the role of Clinical Nurse Educator. On her return to Ireland in 2009, she brought her knowledge and experience in critical care nursing to the post of ECLS Coordinator, and working with Dr Edmund Carton, Consultant Intensivist, she was a key member of the clinical team that developed Ireland’s national adult ECLS service. She has presented at several meetings both nationally and internationally in relation to ECLS practice.

Serena completed her MSc by research degree in 2015 at University College Dublin where she investigated the long-term health-related quality of life of ECLS survivors in Ireland.

She is an active committee member of the IACCN (Irish Association of Critical Care Nurses) and ICUsteps Dublin.
