René Wijnen

Rene Wijnen trained in medicine, surgery and pediatric surgery, and is head of the department of

Pediatric Surgery at the Erasmus MC - Sophia Children’s Hospital since 2010. Before 2010 he held a position as a consultant pediatric surgeon at the Radboud University Nijmegen and focused on thoracic surgery and abdominal wall malformations. His special interest in that period was minimal access surgery (MAS), which he introduced at his department. His research interest is regenerative medicine, was supported by a 6th FP EU grant focused on CDH, esophageal atresia, abdominal wall defects and bladder extrophy. He is author of more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, wrote 12 book chapters and is a member of the editorial board of two international journals of pediatric surgery. He was president of the Dutch pediatric surgery society and member of the general board of the Dutch Society of Surgery.
